Former world No.1 in doubles Sania Mirza hit the ground running by winning her first round encounter in the WTA Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Tuesday night.
The Indian, a three-time Grand Slam winner, joined forces with Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia to get past the Russian-Slovanian duo Alla Kudryavtseva and Katarina Srebotnik 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 on Court 3 of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium.
Sania, who had won the doubles title in Dubai in 2013 when she partnered American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, was coming back from a calf injury, which she had sustained during the third round of the Australian Open in January.
Sania, who had returned to the sport following a two-year maternity break in January, has been given one of the two wildcards for the 20th running of the tournament.
