A 29-year-old Brazilian-born footballer on Monday received the Emirati citizenship so he could join the national team.

The UAE Football Association announced that Caio Canedo Correa, who plays for Al Ain FC, has received the Emirati citizenship so he could join the national team.

Caio plays as a midfielder for Al Ain and sports jersey no. 7, the club's website said.

Local Arabic daily Emarat Al Youm said the footballer has played for Al Wasl FC prior to his stint at Al Ain FC.

Another Brazilian player, Fabio Virginio de Lima, who plays for Al Wasl, is likely to get the UAE citizenship as well, the report added.

Al Ain FC will now be able to take on board a new foreign player, since Caio will be playing as an Emirati player henceforth, the report added, quoting UAE FA.
