The RAK Criminal Court has sentenced a young Arab man to life in prison after being convicted of possessing, consuming and trafficking in narcotic pills.
The accused, who can challenge the verdict at the higher court, shall also be deported after serving the jail term in full. The court also ordered the destruction of the drugs seized.
As per court records, the case unfolded early this year when the anti-narcotics department was alerted about the druggie by an undercover agent.
The suspect was closely monitored and tracked down, and a tight security trap was set until he was later apprehended red-handed with a large amount of narcotic pills in his possession. Samples of the suspect druggie's blood and urine were sent to the Criminal Lab of the RAK Police which later proved positive to narcotic tramadol. However, the accused denied trading in drugs and claimed to be only using them.
The RAK Police referred the drug dealer and narcotics confiscated to the RAK Public Prosecution which charged him with consuming, possessing and peddling narcotics. The RAK Criminal Court turned down the suspect's 'only consumption' claims based on the testimony of the CID which was professionally armed with the permission of the Public Prosecution and a conclusive video.
The footage submitted to the court, presided over by Chief Judge Hamdi Yassin, showed that the suspect was really implicated in drug dealing among young men and not only abusing narcotics.
