Legendary cricketer Kapil Dev suffered a heart attack on Friday and underwent angioplasty surgery. He is now in stable condition, according to reports in Indian media.
The 61-year-old Kapil, one of the greatest all-rounders cricket has ever seen, famously led India to 1983 Cricket World Cup victory.
Kapil ended his Test career in 1994 with 434 wickets. The right-arm fast bowler also took 225 wickets in one-day cricket.
Named Wisden Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002, Kapil remains the only player in the history of the game to have claimed more than 400 Test wickets and scored over 5000 runs.
According to Indian news agency ANI, the former India captain was undergoing the angioplasty surgery at Fortis Hospital, Okhla, New Delhi.
“Currently, he is admitted in ICU and under close supervision...” the hospital said.
“Mr. Kapil Dev is stable now and he is expected to get discharged in couple of days.”
The news sparked an outpouring of messages on social media.
“Wishing the big-hearted, mighty Kapil Dev a speedy recovery. So much more to do,” Harsha Bhogle tweeted.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also wished the 1983 World Cup hero a speedy recovery.
“Concerned to learn that the legendary #KapilDev has suffered a heart attack & is in hospital. His mighty heart won many a battle for India. Wishing him the very best in winning this one too,” Tharoor wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Irfan Pathan also wished the former Indian coach a speedy recovery.
“My prayers are with you, hope you get well soon #Kapildev paji,” the former Indian left-arm pace bowler tweeted.
