A smile is a sentiment. It is a gesture that befriends people, irrespective of the fact whether they know each other or not. A generous smile makes people feel comfortable when they meet, and especially in cases if two estranged people or strangers come across, a simple gesture of smile is more than enough to melt the ice. This is why it is said, a smile is more than a thousand words spoken, and could help people harness the sense of commonality.
Smile, likewise, is all about sharing love, happiness and the sense of belonging with each other. The World Smile Day concept originated in Massachusetts by a commercial artist Harvey Ball, and since then has gone universal because it acclaims to the lighter side of life. He caricatured a smiley face, apparently with a mischievous but longing split of lips raised to the upper end, which sooner than later became a symbol to redefine deed sans words. It would be more appropriate to mention that human societies and civilisations are accustomed to the notion of a smile, and is considered as a blessing. So, to say, the phrase 'Have a happy day', became a common pleasantry in the Western hemisphere because societies and people identified the sigma of a smile as part of their evolution and sophisticated culture.
The UAE, too, is in it and has rather made the concept of a smile official. The Happiness Ministry and the subsequent campaign to share a smile is unique in essence, and has buoyed the idea of good governance. The UAE was the first country in the world to introduce the concept of a smile, and sharing sentiments in police stations, by affixing smiley faces. It helped further human interaction and eliminates the phenomenon of fear and otherness.
Thumbay Dental Hospital and Snö Dental Clinics, Abu Dhabi, have rightly identified their services with the notion of a smile, and they have made a leap forward with a smiley mascot. The intention is to create awareness for oral healthcare, and help teeth, gums and mouth be free from diseases and unpleasantness.
While a smile is linked to face and its pleasantness, services and industries associated with dentistry cue behind it to make an impact. Toothbrush, toothpaste and other accessories of the dental industries prefer to go with the symbol of a smiley. A smiley interaction makes room for friendliness, accommodation and generosity.
