Technology has become an essential part of modern life, and home appliances are evolving in more ways than what was once limited to the imagination of sci-fi authors and movies.
From tracking health stats to staying digitally connected, it has become a part of the household. According to EuroMonitor, the growth of smart home culture is driven by an improved network infrastructure and high smartphone penetration rates, which could lead to an increased adoption of connected appliances this year. Busy lifestyles and consumers' desire to add convenience to their lives are other contributing factors.
App-controlled washing machines and thermostats, smart refrigerators and lighting, cloud-connected televisions and self-diagnosis medical devices, to name a few, are becoming the norm in homes with a high disposable income.
The Dubai-based market intelligence publisher further predicts a global increase on electricity, gas and other fuel spends to $835 billion this year, thanks to "the rise of time-saving connected appliances, such as robotic vacuum cleaners. Connected appliances that can bring about cost savings, such as air conditioners and fridge freezers, will be increasingly favoured by consumers."
Furthermore, a report on home appliances by analytics company, IHS Markit, noted: "the penetration of smart connected appliances is set to increase to nearly 50 per cent by the year 2020 on a conservative basis", with product development dictated by consumer needs.
As the global population becomes accustomed to technology, here are few trends in home appliances expected to complement industry growth:
Artificial intelligence
The year 2017 will see a rise in artificial intelligence in various settings. Supported by the Internet of Things (IoT), devices will be able to learn and understand user's behaviour better, thus leading to complete automation of appliances. For instance, a refrigerator would be able to alert the owner when ingredients are low in quantity and place an order to have groceries delivered to their doorstep. The payment can be made online automatically and special drop chutes can collect packages. Concepts such as these could completely transform the way our lifestyle.
Eco-friendly goods
Energy efficiency remains a priority in new models. Consumers today are highly aware of the environmental impact caused by emissions from home appliances. To keep up with demand, manufacturers are designing products aligned with consumer interest that are further validated by renowned quality marks and certifications. The eco-conscious community prefers to be informed and resourceful, which is why devices that highlight statistics - ranging from emission rate to power consumption - are deemed worthy home investments.
Virtual and augmented reality
Virtual reality and augmented reality are two factors blurring the lines between real life and fiction, with computer-generated elements that enhance all five human senses. Users can experience an "out-of-this-world" adventure through software and hardware devices from the comfort of their homes. While virtual reality features a pre-designed environment, augmented reality spices things up by a notch by implementing several graphic elements into one's surroundings in real time. Both concepts have been a part of the gaming industry for a while and could be integrated into households for a variety of purposes.
Built-in appliances
Rising rents are driving people with high disposable income into smaller homes, which in turn are generating a market for built-in appliances that make the best use of limited space. Convertible dining tables, multifunctional stoves, and cabinets that double as dryers, for instance, are some examples in homes today. Smart homes also feature transparent or LED door displays, Bluetooth connectivity and sensors that operate based on homeowners' habits.
App-controlled gadgets
Smartphones and tablets have become an indispensible accessory in today's world, and given rise to the integration of mobile applications with home appliances. Through this, users can activate devices at home without the need to be physically present. Complemented by Internet connectivity, the concept allows busy users who spent a lot of time outdoors to control appliances remotely. This means having clean rooms, freshly washed garments, and ready warm meals set before entering home.
Focus on wellness
Connected healthcare devices are making their way home, giving users a user-friendly platform to monitor vital statistics. From keeping track of blood sugar levels to reminding patients about their daily dosage, the data collected is wirelessly sent to attending professionals in hospitals, who can easily analyse the patient's condition and adjust medication and treatment accordingly. This eliminates transportation costs, optimises medical diagnosis and helps patients recuperate at ease.
Eye on aesthetics
As users upgrade to premium appliances such as luxury coffee machines, robotic vaccuum cleaners and voice-controlled refrigerators, consumer electronics take on contemporary designs to complement different moods and interiors. While some appliances take on forms to conveniently sit in corners or small spaces, others feature sleek designs that give a refreshing look to ordinary homes.  New types of consumer electronics and home appliances also incorporate the use of lightweight eco-friendly materials and easy-to-clean surfaces for effortless maintenance.
