Gaza projectile hits Israel, no casualties
NICOSIA - A projectile fired from the Gaza Strip fell harmlessly on southern Israel on Friday, Israeli military sources said.
Israel’s military usually replies to such attacks with air raids on the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.
The Israeli army launched Operation Cast Lead against the Gaza Strip over the new year of 2009, with the stated aim of ending rocket attacks and mortar fire against Israeli territory.
Hamas has since effected a de facto ceasefire, without preventing smaller groups from firing at Israel or at Israeli troops at the border or within the Gaza Strip.
More than 230 rocket and mortar attacks targetting Israel were fired from the Gaza Strip in 2010, according to figures from the Israeli military.
