The project is looking for midwives, saleswomen, massage therapists and those involved in the business of herbal and traditional medicines.
The project named ‘Biographies of Women in the Memory of the Nation’ will be launched by Awal Women Society on March 6 to coincide with International Women’s Day.
Fatima Shamsan, a businesswomen, will be the first person to be profiled under the project.
Her children and grandchildren will be asked to deliver a lecture at an special event to highlight various aspects of her life.
Shamsan (1903-1990) was born in Muharraq. Initially, she tried her hands at many things, but in 1951 she picked sales as her forte.
She earned a name for herself as she used to travel to India to bring embroidered textiles, itrs (scents) and perfumes to sell in the local market.
“The concept of the project is to highlight the lives of ordinary Bahraini women with extraordinary skills who were and still are a source of inspiration for many people here,” member of the society Dr Sabika Al Najar told Khaleej Times.
“We are searching for women like Shamsan and their families will be approached to come and talk about them at lectures.”
The biographies of these women will be printed in a book form. The society will create a database about them. Dr Al Najar said through the project the society wanted to highlight extraordinary roles of women in their neighbourhoods and their contribution to Bahrain’s development.
“In the first stage our project would highlight achievements of women who are no longer alive. These women had made tremendous contribution in social, economic, cultural and political fields. In later stages women from contemporary Bahraini society might be included,” she said while highlighting that the project would help researchers planning to study the history of Bahraini women.
