Videos are officially the future of online news, according to Helje Solberg, CEO and Editor of VGTV Norway. During her session 'Online Video: From Stunts to Core Business, The Engine for Future Growth', she discussed VGTV's move from print to video. In the presentation, it was shown that majority of VGTV's traffic comes from online - with only 10% coming from print. Solberg's presentation listed down five reasons why videos important now more than ever in today's media landscape.
The first point revealed that videos are in their youngest phase right now. Solberg said: "Media is probably just scratching the surface of what visual storytelling could do for the digital world." Another point made was that people expect to see videos nowadays. This speaks volumes about how media outlets should adopt videos if they haven't yet.
Apart from making news, video allows news outlets to get in touch with the younger audience who, Solberg said, prefer a more community driven approach - one which videos allow. Videos, she added, enlighten, investigate and at the same time entertain.
On the business side, Solberg emphasised the rise of video advertisements as a way to monetise video content. There is a caution however as some ads can be intrusive such as the ones that make you wait seconds before watching the desired video content.
Most importantly she gave vital pointers on how to make a successful video. "It has to be short (within reason), have short text, should not in any way be a "clickbait" - that makes the viewer feel cheated, and most importantly being able to watch a video without sound."
