A number of supermarkets and food outlets in Sharjah were recently spotted selling essential goods at prices higher than those set by the Ministry of Economy, authorities said on Sunday.
As it stepped up inspections on the first and and second day of Ramadan, the Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) warned traders and retailers against such price hikes.
Salim Al Suwaidi, deputy director of commercial control and protection department at SEDD, said that with enhanced inspection campaigns, they will ensure that there would be no increases in the prices of goods and that the items being sold are safe for consumption.
"These campaigns seeks to secure markets and guarantee the protection of consumer rights, especially during the holy month of Ramadan," Al Suwaidi said.
Through close supervision and cracking down on violators in the market, the SEDD aims to ensure that all economic establishments in Sharjah are committed to rules and regulations, he added.
Al Suwaidi also called on the public to report violations to the SEDD. They may call the hotline  80080000, reach out via social media (@Sharjaheconomic), or visit the consumer protection website www.shjconsumer.ae.
