His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, has ordered the release of 187 prisoners of various nationalities from Sharjah Punitive and Reformatory Establishments (SPRE) (Central Jail) on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.
The pardon has been granted to prisoners who showed good conduct. Jail inmates in financial debts were also pardoned, as well as those who committed various crimes - except murder and drug trafficking.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Brig Saif Al Zeri, commander-in-chief of Sharjah Police said the prisoners who are benefiting from the pardon decision have met all conditions and requirements laid down by the police to ensure that they become good citizens and learn from their mistakes.
"There is special committee formed by the management of SPRE to study the cases and review the conduct of the inmates to ensure they will be able to resume new life and support their families whether in the UAE or in their countries," he pointed out.
On the occasion of the holy month, he extended his thanks and appreciation to His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah for this generous gesture which comes within the framework of His Highness's keenness to support the family entity and bring joy and happiness to the families of the convicts.
