A look at five brave celebrities who have battled or are continuing to battle the disease.
We know and love her best for her role as Brenda Walsh on the hit show 'Beverly Hills, 90210'. Shannon has put up a brave fight against breast cancer for the past five years. She confirmed to People magazine in August 2015 that she was being treated for the disease, and in April 2017 stated that post surgery, radiation and chemotherapy she was in remission. Sadly, by February 2020 the cancer returned and reached Stage 4. She spoke about it on 'Good Morning America', admitting that she didn’t disclose her diagnosis while filming the 2019 reboot of '90210' because “People with stage 4 can work too… Our life doesn’t end the minute we get the diagnosis. We still have some living to do.”
She treated audiences to laughs a-plenty with her roles in 'Seinfeld' and 'Veep' but not all was well in Julia’s world in 2017 when she announced that she had breast cancer. In an interview with Vanity Fair in August 2019, Julia spoke of the six rounds of chemotherapy she underwent, as well as a double mastectomy. She earned her 7th Emmy nomination for the final season of 'Veep', which she returned to film after her cancer treatments.
The gorgeous 72-year-old British-Australian singer and star of 'Grease' was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. "I wasn't feeling right, and I had found lumps before, but this time, it just felt different,” she told Everyday Health. "I don't tell the story to scare people," she said, "but to really stress the importance of knowing your own body and trusting your instincts. This is the very reason I am now such a big supporter of monthly breast self exams.” Her cancer returned in 2013 and went into remission after hormone treatment, but she is now facing the battle for the third time as it metastasized to her bones in 2017.
The Grammy Award-winning singer was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in 2004. She had a lumpectomy, had 15 lymph nodes removed, and underwent five rounds of chemotherapy and radiation as per a report in Everyday Health. Melissa wrote a song dedicated to breast cancer survivors called ‘I Run For Life’.
