When teachers skip classes the quality of education is affected. Students lose direction and are distracted from their goals in life. They struggle to find role models. A survey by the Abu Dhabi's education regulator found many teachers preferred to bunk classes and relax during work hours. This is a source of concern and embarrassment for others in the profession who put in their best efforts. They should not be tarred by the same brush.
The Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) inspections showed many teachers did not attend the stipulated number of classes. They lacked leadership qualities and students were turning into bullies due to their absence from duties. Cases of violence in classrooms had doubled. In all, 262 government schools from across the emirate were evaluated and were given 30 days' notice to come up with improvement plans.
This is good for accountability. Adec has acted swiftly and it is hoped their actions will stem the tide. The teachers' performance inspection was based on global benchmarks, such as students' achievements; students' personal and social development and their innovation skills. Teachers' were assessed based on their handling of the curriculum, guidance and support they provided to students; and leadership. The intention is to not only reform the education sector, but also to raise standards.
Reform, however, must also cover teachers' salaries and perks. Steps should be taken to motivate them and to improve their welfare.
