Sachin’s Sweet Revenge

A total of 200 was good enough for winning a one-day International (ODI) some 10 years ago. After the advent of Twenty20 cricket though, even a total of 400 is not being considered safe.

Despite every format of cricket, be it Tests or ODIs, being played aggressively these days, there are certain individual records regarded as tough to beat. One among them was a double century in ODIs. Till two days ago, the individual highest score in ODIs was 194, set by Pakistan’s Saeed Anwar and Zimbabwe’s Charles Coventry, earlier.

On Wednesday, India’s Sachin Tendulkar scored an unbeaten 200 in the second ODI against the touring South Africa in Gwalior to become the first batsman to score a double century in ODIs. He hammered 25 fours and three sixes in his 147-ball knock to power India to a 153-run victory.

It is one of the most remarkable achievements in Tendulkar’s 21-year old international career. Regarded as the most complete batsman, Tendulkar’s record comes at a time when the so-called experts wondered whether the batsman should continue playing one-day cricket, considering his age. They said Tendulkar could concentrate on Tests alone. His new ODI record is a sweet revenge on his detractors and the Doubting Thomases. Tendulkar showed that age alone is not the criteria to excel in one-day cricket, but talent, passion, concentration and dedication are the important components for success. It is not easy to maintain consistency in sports, but Tendulkar’s focus on the game has to be admired, as he still has the appetite to score big runs.

The 36-year old Tendulkar is rightly regarded as the biggest cricket icon in the world as he has managed to accomplish almost all achievements a player could dream of. With 46 one-day centuries and 47 Test centuries in his kitty, Tendulkar is well on his way to achieve the rare feat of a combined 100 tons in international cricket. Tendulkar would now be eying the World Cup to be held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh next year to add the one record that is missing in his illustrious career. A World Cup trophy! It is time for the cricket fans to salute the Little Master for brightening and enlivening their lives with so many exciting moments. Congrats Sachin!
