The UAE has pitted tolerance against terrorism and won. The violent mutations of extremism have been curbed, and this strategy is making the country the centre of human co-existence, social cohesion and peace. A society that is at peace with itself becomes a model to the world. This country values inclusivity while taking a stand against those who wield hate and sectarianism to gain power and spread fear through the gun. In fact, the UAE has targeted the violent ideas of the Muslim Brotherhood by taking tolerance to a new level, and drafting it into law. Through this legislation, the UAE has struck at the heart of the practitioners of hate. People have found an oasis of calm in the UAE and have become model global citizens. The country even has minister for tolerance, a first in the world. The ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood has influenced several terror groups like Al Qaeda, Daesh, Taleban and Boko Haram who have spread a culture of violence in the Middle East and Africa for decades.
Countries like Qatar have promoted this ideology and even supported these terror groups as an instrument of state policy to meet their strategic goals. Some of them like the Taleban are state guests of Doha and are holding talks with the US in their bid to return Afghanistan to normalcy.
What the UAE has done is to raise an alternative to defang these extremist groups, to pluck them from roots. It has won the ideological war by promoting harmony between religions; it has welcomed people and made them stay and thrive. Talent is valued here and those who have ideas are the toast of the nation. The larger idea is to focus on development as an ideology - a shared prosperity for all humanity to keep poverty away, which will make the Muslim Brotherhood and other violent groups less attractive to people. Credit must go to the UAE leadership led by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who are leading efforts for a peaceful and tolerant society. Violence begets violence, they say. But in the UAE, tolerance has snuffed the life out of terror.
