Although even now the Internet, responding to constant commands of a computer, conducts itself sensibly, the future of the Web could be dramatically different. The big idea spawning the semantic Web or intelligent Internet has Internet experts and just about everybody who uses the Net excited. This is being described as the next big thing after the e-mail.

At present, most information on the Net is produced by humans for humans and Net isn’t conscious of the nature or import of the data. That is, the Net can offer you the information and facts you want but it is up to you to determine whether they are good or bad or suitable for your particular needs. The intelligent Net could help you make the right choice according to your own requirements and preferences. You wouldn't have to sift through a maze of relevant and irrelevant information to find that specific piece of fact you are looking for. The Web would do that for you -- and in no time.

There’s a downside to this though. With a mind of its own, the futuristic Web could be a serious challenge to privacy. Sensitive data and online financial transactions could face greater threat. But then you can’t have the cake and eat it too.
