Much the same thought process forms the engine behind the attention being given by Shaikh Mohammed to the new health plan. It will go on stream under the Federal Health Authority and will further enhance what is already a very advanced system. But the Ruler has emphasised the need whenever he gets the opportunity to teach them young and one can be pretty sure that creating the desire for a health oriented lifestyle in the youth will continue to be the spearhead of his campaign. It is not by accident that Dubai and now the UAE in general is seen as a Sport citadel. Indeed it is by grand design that over the past few decades the UAE has become an international powerhouse for global sports stars to visit and display their talent as well provide state of the art facilities for residents to stay fit and fine.

One of the most endearing features of the health policy is that the Ruler himself sets the example and it is not just the endurance tests he engages in but the regimen he encourages others to follow. Healthy eating, healthy exercise and a healthy approach to ensuring that their children are not taught wrong habits. From sport to medicine is a small leap because on is predicated on the other.

The UAE has recognised that the danger of prosperity is laziness and sloth and that ends up in ailments that are debilitating and cost the exchequer huge sums of money. Today, childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes are two major issues that face the population and we would, as parents, do well to set the example being given to us by Shaikh Mohammed that our children deserve better and that it is the responsibility of all adults, especially teachers and parents to introduce into their lives a certain discipline and an awareness that health is not only an institutional problem but also something that must be tackled on the home front.
