JAPAN, the once mighty Empire of the Sun that not long ago ruled the vast areas of Asia, has chosen to maintain peace since its defeat in the World War II. Even as the world divided itself into two camps and chased the so-called Weapons of Mass Destruction, Japan pursued peace, technological progress and prosperity.

All that could change soon. Japan’s governing party has decided to bring in drastic constitutional changes through a referendum that could allow the country to transform itself into a military power once again.

And Japan has every right to do so considering the recent far-reaching changes in the country’s neighbourhood. With communist China fast growing as a political, economic and military power and a big player on the world stage, Japan has no alternative but look for options to defend itself. Since their rout in the last great war, both Japan and Germany have largely depended on the United States for their defence. This strategic alliance of Japan with Washington is likely to continue in the years to come. However, it obviously needs more security assurances than the reassuring company of the world’s remaining superpower. In the post-Cold war times, nation states are increasingly depending on themselves for their defence.
