Clegg’s clarion call

Nick Clegg is known more for conformity of views than for taking an exceptional stance. But the British politician made a stunning case when he voiced against Russia and called for denying Moscow an opportunity to host the 2018 Fifa World Cup.

The deputy prime minister’s clarion call will find a constituency, at least, in Europe and is going to pose a tough time for the organisers and the host as the pendulum of public opinion will hang in balance. He is not alone in taking that stand as several German politicians also nurse similar views.

Clegg’s anger against Kremlin is for allegedly downing the Malaysian airliner, MH17, which he thinks will serve as a severe sanction. This demand is likely to make ripples felt as Russia will obviously be concerned not only on its political fallout but also monetary losses that might be incurred in case of a somersault. It will in one way or the other bring pressure on Russia to readjust its priorities while dealing with the crisis in Ukraine. All that Russian President Vladimir Putin should do is to cooperate with the investigation that is underway to probe into the causes of disaster and desist from playing to the gallery by saying that Ukrainian military was responsible for the cowardice act. That spirit can help address the issue in a comprehensive manner and at the same time provide justice to the families of airliner victims.

Though Clegg may have his own theories as he links sports with realpolitik, the fact is that it is quite unfortunate, per se. As stated by Fifa, let the tournament be a ‘force for good’, and not one camouflaged under ill-will considerations.
