Back to Iraq

THE Lebanon crisis has done little to slow down the action on the other front. Iraq remains as miserable and unsafe as ever. The insurgent attacks that are supposed to target US coalition troops but always end up killing innocent Iraqi bystanders have yet to stop.

The militias run by Shia parties continue to target Sunni population in organised vendetta killings. This is why it is surprising that President Jalal Talabani should be talking of the Iraqi security forces taking over the control of the entire country by the end of this year. But it may not be fair to censure the president. After all, Talabani, a Kurd, is a figurehead. The real power rests with Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki. And his government is yet to enforce peace in the capital Baghdad, let alone take control of the whole of Iraq. The Iraqi government, if it can be called that, operates from the comfort and safety of the Green Zone.

While the control of Iraq should be passed on to Iraqi people and their representatives at the earliest possible, the US coalition forces can't just walk out leaving the ill-prepared Iraqi forces in charge. This will not only create a huge security vacuum, it could very well open the gates of hell.
