Shaikh Mohammed’s rise to UAE’s leadership has seen the Emirates reaching out and integrating with the international community on an unprecedented scale. And considering Germany’s economic profile and technical expertise, it was only natural for the leadership here to press for increased bilateral interaction, both political and economic.

Shaikh Mohammed’s vision was spelt out clearly at the beginning of his reaching-out drive. His words in New Delhi, where standing beside Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh he emphasised how the hands of the clock are constantly ticking away, and that no time should be wasted in forging mutually agreeable and favourable alliances, are the driving force behind his vision for the Emirates’ future. Already the UAE has clinched numerous deals with international power structures and capitals that will have compound social and economic trickle downs.

With Germany, the mutual trade equation is in need of urgent revision, tilting more than ten-fold in Berlin’s favour. The economic team accompanying Shaikh Mohammed must no doubt have made extensive potential provisions for bringing pragmatic changes to this imbalance, and considering the UAE’s burgeoning economic output and interaction with international players, a more mutually beneficial arrangement should not take too long to work out.

It is important to note that often actions speak far louder than words in international relations. And the reception given in honour of the UAE leader was a fitting show of how seriously Germany is taking this revitalised partnership with the Emirates. The last few years have seen the UAE firmly cement its position as one of the foremost business and tourist destinations on the planet. As multinationals rush to UAE in numbers paralleled in few places even in the West, Germany is displaying economic and diplomatic prudence in acknowledging what UAE’s current leadership has strived for for years.

Germany’s giant economy and immense EU political clout make it an important player in today’s world. As UAE continues to grow in prominence, a partnership based on mutual trust and friendship is the right course forward.
