In a chilling incident, a man surprised Russian airport authorities after they caught him with 20 live snakes in his hand baggage.
The passenger, whose name and nationality were withheld, carried the reptiles in his bags and flew from Germany to Russia. The man managed to board at Dusseldorf Airport in Germany and was caught by officers of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) only after he landed in Moscow, Newsweek reports. The incident was confirmed by Russia's Sheremetyevo International Airport.
"The reptiles were in canisters, packed in bags, carried in hand luggage. There were no documents provided for the reptiles," the officers said. The EPA added, "The species of snakes will be determined by specialists, but according to preliminary information they are not venomous species."
According to additional reporting by RP Online, the man said that he had bought the non-venomous snakes from a market in Germany. However, as German police did not report him while he boarded the flight, he might have had the required documents to carry the snakes. Despite this, he did not have the requisite permission to get the snakes into Russia.
