Residents of a town in Vermont state, US, elected a peculiar new mayor, a goat named Lincoln, which will be sworn into office at a Select Board meeting Tuesday.
The Fair Haven town manager, Joe Gunther, decided to hold an election for an animal mayor in a bid to raise money to replace a school playground. Residents could nominate their pets for the mayoral office and in exchange donate $5 for the school playground.
The newly elected mayor Lincoln is a three-year-old Nubian goat which beat a dog named Sammie by only two votes. Gunther said Lincoln will serve a one-year term with duties including marching in the Memorial Day parade. "Fair Haven Fridays, the occasional show-up, spring fling, all the major functions," UPI quoted Gunther as saying in the Rutland Herald.
The unusual election, according to Gunther, turned out to be an educational opportunity for the town's children. "Originally we did it as a fundraiser to replace the playground behind the school, but it really turned into a small civic lesson for the children," Gunter told the Burlington Free Press.

Mirroring the bizarre election, in a recent report Metro.co.uk. revealed how a 13-year-old dog named Duke had been a mayor of a Minnesota village for four years in a row since 2014 until his death. The Great Pyrenees was certified 'very good boy' and was mayor of Cormorant Village where his job involved representing the town, leading parades and appearing on billboards.
