US Customs officials seized a bag containing dozens of dead, dried birds from a passenger arriving from China.
According to the Independent, the bag was confiscated at Dulles International Airport near Washington DC on a flight from Beijing.
The mostly transparent bag had pictures of dogs and cats printed on it, according to agricultural specialists, and contained several 3-inch-long dead, dried birds, which the passenger claimed was cat food.
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) quickly confiscated the package and incinerated the contents, as the birds were not allowed to be imported to the country amid recent threats of bird flu.
Because the packaging seems to indicate they are sold as pet food in China, they might not have caught the attention of Chinese officials, the CBP said.
"These dead birds are prohibited from importation to the United States as unprocessed birds pose a potentially significant disease threat to our nPassenger caught with bag of dead birds from China.
