India's Nishad Kumar booked his ticket for the Paralympics in Tokyo next year after landing the bronze in the men's high jump T47 category at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai on Wednesday.

Nishad came up with his personal best of 2.00 metres, while American Roberts-Townsend won the gold with a jump of 2.03 metres.

It was India's third bronze at the Worlds and they also have two gold and a silver.

"I am super happy. It's my first World Championships and I never expected that I will get a medal competing against such top athletes. My next target is Tokyo 2020 Paralympics," said Nishad.

Meanwhile, Paralympic Committee of India Gursharan Singh congratulated Nishad and said: "My heartiest congratulations to Nishad. We have already surpassed last 2017 World Para Athletics performance of five medals. As predicted, it became true. I thank all of those who supported and contributed to the Paralympic Movement in India to such a height."

India's Tek Chand missed out in the men's javelin throw F54 category after finishing sixth. The event was won by Iran's Hamed Amiri, who had a championship record.

The UAE's Mohammed Al Kaabi missed out on qualification for the Tokyo Paralympics after finishing seventh in the men's shot put F36 category, while compatriot Saeed Mubarak was 13th.

The event saw a new world being set with Vladimir Sviridov breaking the 16 mark with a throw of 16.32 metres. The Russian has held the previous mark of 15.34 metres set in Grosseto, Italy, in June 2016.
