Rainy days are not only a sign of bad weather - because in the UAE, more rains mean the country's sustainability drive and research efforts have been bearing fruit, a top government official said.
"The increase in the amount of rainfall that the UAE received this year is an indication that our rain enhancement programmes, including cloud-seeding, are yielding positive results, and we are expecting more rains in the future," Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of a Press conference for the Abu Dhabi Climate Meeting next week.
Over 1,000 political leaders, heads of state and climate change action experts will be gathering in Abu Dhabi to discuss how alarming environmental changes should be addressed.
Set to be held on June 30 and July 1 at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, the high-level gathering aims to draft resolutions that shall be presented at the UN Climate Change Meeting in New York this September.
"We are all aware that the threat of climate change is so serious that it requires international cooperation and multilateral climate action. The UAE is therefore honoured to serve as the host for such significant discussions in partnership with the United Nations," Al Zeyoudi said at the Press meet.
"We are also privileged to have the opportunity to showcase the work we are doing here in the UAE and demonstrate our unequivocal commitment to climate action. This proactive approach has always stemmed from our belief that ambitious climate action does and always will make sound business sense."
Joining the world in reducing carbon emissions, the UAE has been determined to promote renewable energies; conserve biodiversity; and make use of the latest green technologies in water desalination and distribution, which has helped reduce water scarcity and improve sustainability in the country, Dr Al Zeyoudi said.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres will be welcoming the world's leading climate action advocates to the meeting, Among them are ministers from Europe, Asia, South America and Africa.
Other participants include heads of states from some of the most vulnerable countries that face natural disasters, changing landscapes and resilience issues. Policy-makers driving change - such as Miguel Arias Cañete, European Union Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, who is working with member states to ensure that the EU becomes climate neutral by 2050 - will also be at the event.

Better summers ahead
The UAE has been successfully employing the latest technology to improve the quality of life in the emirates. And it has done so in a responsible and a sustainable way. The success of cloud seeding is a case in point. Continued experiments should make summers more bearable and can support agricultural sector. However, we should also tread with caution. Tinkering with the nature can be costly, too, if we go to extremes.
