Video: Sharjah starts three-day anti-mosquito drive

Sharjah - More than 96 workers and supervisors have been deployed to spray pesticides on areas that are likely to become mosquito breeding sites.

Teams from the Sharjah Municipality on Wednesday started a three-day mosquito control campaign, spraying pesticide on areas that are likely to become breeding grounds of insects and mosquitoes this winter season.

Working with the National Centre for Malaria Vector Control of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the municipality is taking all necessary precautions to prevent any outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases.

More than 96 workers and supervisors have been deployed for the campaign, said Wisal Jasim Habash, director of the environmental services department.

All workers were provided with safety tools and other equipment, including 24 hand sprayers, 24 spraying machines, five vehicle-mounted micro-spraying machines, and 24 bags of mosquito larvae inspection trolley. Eighty litres of specialised pesticides has been prepared for the drive.

Hassan Al Tafaq, director of agriculture and environment department at the municipality, said they have developed an action plan that aims to eliminate pests, insects and mosquitoes across the city. The team had also mapped out areas that are likely to become breeding sites.

“During the campaign, the municipality will also be educating the public on how to get red of mosquitoes in their areas,” Al Tafaq said.

He added that a weekly schedule has been prepared for the spraying team, which will be targeting areas with stagnant water, water storage barrels, planting trays, water tanks, discarded pots, water ponds, and drainage holes.
