The Central Environment and Food Lab of the Umm Al Quwain Municipality examined 5,392 samples last year.
A total of 998 food products — 572 samples of imported foods and drinks, 426 samples of exported foods and drinks were tested by the lab.
Some of them did not meet the strict standards adopted, according to sources. “These include 24 samples which the municipality received complaints about.”
Advanced scanning and testing devices are used at the UAQ central lab to detect any violations. “Examinations are conducted for pollutants, oil and grease wastes, recycled sewage water, swimming pool water, agriculture and irrigation water, fertilisers, factory wastes, tank water at houses, schools and hospitals. We also examine inorganic pollutants, including heavy metals, such as lead, zinc, mercury, arsenic, chromium, and others.”
