Tawam Hospital, a healthcare facility affiliated with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha), completed Al Ain's second organ donation, in partnership with the Saudi Centre for Organ Transplantation.

The 50-year-old donor was admitted at Tawam Hospital last month, following an acute stroke that resulted in brain trauma and consequently brain death.

The organ donation process was conducted after obtaining the approval of the deceased’s relatives. The operation lasted for about four hours.

The heart was sent to Saudi Arabia while the rest of the organs were sent to different patients in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

All organs were transplanted into four different patients. A team of a Saudi consultant and two others from the UAE participated in the process of organ extraction, supported by nurses and technicians.

The second-of-its-kind operation in Al Ain City saved the lives of four patients, who suffered from incurable diseases.

Dr Hala Abu Zaid, head of the intensive care unit, and head of the organ donation unit, Tawam Hospital, said the donor benefited two patients from Abu Dhabi – one required a liver transplant, and the other, a kidney.

Another kidney transplant was for a patient from Dubai. His heart gave a new lease of life to a patient in Saudi Arabia.

“The operation was successful, and the organs were transported by fully-equipped technical crews, and a medical evacuation team,” Dr Zaid added.
