-An Al Ain resident will have to pay Dh70,000 to the child’s father in compensation for throwing a glass bottle at a child which caused a 10 per cent loss to her eyesight.

Police investigations showed that the girl was playing in the residential compound when an angry woman shouted at her before throwing a glass bottle that hit the girl’s left eye. The girl's family lived in the same compound as the defendant.

A medical report showed that the child sustained a permanent disability to her left eye and she had suffered a 10 per cent loss in her eyesight.

The Al Ain criminal court had earlier convicted the woman and fined her Dh20,000 for assaulting the child.

The child's father then filed a civil lawsuit against her demanding Dh300,000 in compensation for the physical, moral and material damages.

He said the assault had affected his child and that he spent a lot of money on her treatment in various hospitals. The father told the court that the incident also affected both the girl and the family psychologically as they thought she was going to lose her eyesight.

The civil court of first instance had earlier ordered the woman to pay to pay the child Dh50,000 in compensation for the damages.

The father challenged the ruling and the appeal court increased the compensation payout to Dh70,000.
