The UAE is celebrating the 45th Arab Deaf Week between April 20-27, 2020 in cooperation with all deaf service providers in the UAE and in conjunction with the Arab Federation of Organisations Working with the Deaf.
The Ministry of Community Development, MOCD, announced that it will organise a series of events and initiatives across the week.
Arab Deaf Week was launched in 1974 following the recommendations of the Arab Federation for the Deaf. Since then, government, private and non-profit institutions in the Arab world come together to recognise and support the hearing impaired under a common theme.
This year's celebration has been named 'The Right of Deaf to Get Married and Support by Community Institutions'.
During the Arab Deaf Week, the Ministry organises several awareness activities which focus on important information and facts, remote and online lectures and workshops. These include 'Taalul Live' through the ministry's Instagram account with sign language to introduce community members to the importance and rudiments of deaf marriage; another sign language remote workshop for Zayed University students; an online sign language course for children; awareness publications through the ministry's social media accounts to introduce people to such categories and increase their awareness on the priorities and needs of the deaf people in society.
Wafa Hamad Bin Sulaiman, Director of Welfare and Rehabilitation Department for People of Determination, said: "The general principles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, supported by the UAE, supports the rights of deaf people in the Emirati community by taking full advantage of the community services and facilities. We ensure that these services respond to their needs with no discrimination against them in all matters related to marriage, family, parenthood and relationships; their rights to know more information about reproductive health and family planning in proportion to their age and ways of communication."
