Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) on Thursday inaugurated the start of track-laying works in Al Ruwais for Package A of Stage 2 of the UAE’s national railway.

Developed and operated by Etihad Rail, Package A will connect Ruwais with Al Ghuwaifat on the Saudi border, extending to more than 139km.

Sheikh Hamdan met Emirati employees working on the project during the inauguration.

About 59 per cent of Package A's overall works have been completed, according to the Abu Dhabi Media Office. Package A is one of the four main packages of the second phase of the UAE national highway.

Sheikh Hamdan stressed the importance of continuing to develop the project in line with international standards in order to cement the country's position as a global hub for advanced logistics, and as a key pillar of the UAE’s preparations for the next 50 years.

On the occasion of the launch of construction works last year, Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court, and Chairman of Etihad Rail said the undertaking is regarded as one of the UAE's biggest and most beneficial infrastructure projects.

The construction will utilise 700,000 cubic metres of ballast, involve 30,000,000 tons of earthwork and the installation of over 450,000 concrete sleepers provided by Etihad Rail's own manufacturing plant, which produces up to 45,000 railway sleepers each month.
