At a time when sourcing Metro spare parts had been challenging because of the pandemic, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) turned to innovation. They 3D-printed the parts they needed for the Metro, saving them 90 per cent of the time they usually allotted to the task.
A short video clip that the RTA shared on Twitter on Thursday showed how some high-tech machines produce the spare parts in minutes. The authority has been working with Serco, the Dubai Metro maintenance contractor, for the manufacturing process.
"The RTA is always keen on applying the latest technology in various processes including 3D-printing. The drive falls in line with Dubai's 3D printing strategy," said Mohammed Al Amiri, director of maintenance at the Rail Agency of the RTA.
