If you have got away without paying fine while crossing roads from areas not designated for pedestrians till now, desist from doing so the next time. You may not be able to escape the fine now. Reason: Jaywalkers are under intensified police watch, almost everywhere across Sharjah.
Stepping up its crackdown on jaywalking, the Sharjah Police have renewed its warning that those caught crossing roads from undesignated areas will have to shell out Dh400. The fresh campaign comes in the wake of a spate of run-over accidents.
The new drive has a stern warning for drivers too, which advises them to stop at places designated for pedestrians and giving them priority to cross the road safely.
"Article 43 imposes on the motorist a fine of Dh500 and six traffic black points for not giving priority to pedestrians who cross roads from designated areas while Article 48 slaps a fine of Dh500 for parking the vehicle in a pedestrian corridor," pointed out Major Abdul Rahman Khatir, director of traffic awareness at Sharjah traffic police department. He added the police have intensified inspection targeting pedestrians to ensure safety of residents in the emirate. Major Khater said that the campaign will also educate and sensitize road-users to avoid run-overs, which mostly are fatal, and can cause serious injuries that could lead to permanent disability.

During the campaign, the officers are distributing pamphlets and literature about safe crossing of the roads in different languages to people across Sharjah.
The campaign also ensures that the public comply with all the traffic rules and regulations, and follow road instruction signs that indicate the speed of the streets which are mostly crowded with jaywalkers.
"Pedestrians can easily avoid risks by adhering to road safety regulations spelt out by the authorities.
They must avoid crossing the highways that have a speed limit of more than 80 kmph from undesignated areas. They should cross the road only from pedestrian bridges or zebra crossings, not just to avoid traffic fines, but also to prevent dangerous run-over accidents. Motorists should also check themselves from speeding and remain considerate to pedestrians while they are crossing the road," Major Khater said. "Road safety is a shared responsibility that all commuters, including pedestrians, must shoulder and everybody should play their part in making Sharjah roads safer."
