A total of 457,154 drivers, who refrained from committing traffic violations in the last three months, have received 25 per cent discount of their traffic violations, as part of the traffic settlement initiative, launched by the Dubai Police on February 7.
Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, revealed the details during a Press conference held to announce the results of the traffic violations initiative during the first quarter of this year.
Maj-Gen Mohamed Saif Al Zafin, head of the federal traffic prosecution and assistant commander-in-chief of the Dubai Police, praised the results achieved by the initiative, which reflects the keenness of motorists to abide by the traffic laws and respect the road. "This traffic settlement initiative began in the second quarter of this year on the basis of several social, traffic, security and humanitarian dimensions. It has contributed to reducing the traffic violations index and maintaining the security and safety of the road, as well as reducing the financial burdens on the offenders. The initiative became a catalyst to solve the accumulation of traffic violations and enabling motorists to renew their licences and car registrations.
"The initiative aims to enhance traffic safety and raise the level of compliance with traffic laws and spread awareness among drivers. The culture of traffic safety will contribute to achieving the strategic objectives of the traffic departments and patrols and also reducing traffic accidents," he added.
Brig Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the Dubai Police traffic department, said traffic violations have dropped during the period February 1 to May 1 compared to the same period last year. "As many as 43,947 traffic violations, including accidents, were recorded in the first quarter after the implementation of the initiative. The number of traffic accidents recorded during the same period last year was 48,247. The total number of deaths in the last three months is 20 compared to 29 deaths in 2018. Vehicles confiscated by the police have also dropped by 19 per cent," he said.
