An 8-km stretch on Emirates Road has been laid using recycled cold asphalt for the first time by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development.

Eng Ahmad Al Hammadi, director of roads department in the ministry, said the road extends from Al Sarah Bridge in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain (E55) to Intersection-7 on the Sharjah-Dhaid Road (E88)." Up to 8km of the planned 16km has been thoroughly developed, he added. "The ministry is putting in place a strict system to ensure its maintenance on a regular basis."

He pointed out: "This is the first time in the country that the technology to recycle cold asphalt was adopted." "We did not have to remove old asphalt or transport new materials to the same place," he pointed out.

The old asphalt is broken into pieces, mixed with new layers, and pressed again, he explained. "This way, the new asphalt has a better quality because it is mixed with cement and polymer that can sustain heavy weight of trucks."

Not just adding to the durability of the asphalt, the new technology also saves time, money and effort, while there's no need for long road diversions, Al Hammadi underlined.
