Over 425,000 motorists have had their Dubai traffic fines halved after they managed to maintain a clean traffic record for the last six months, the police announced on Thursday. The police had launched the fine discount scheme earlier this year to help drivers commit to driving safely.

Here's all you need to know about the scheme:

Q. I have already got a discount of 50 per cent on my fines in Dubai. Should I pay the amount now?
A. No. Commit to safe driving for the next three months and you will get an additional 25 per cent off. If you don't commit any traffic offences for the next six months, the entire fine amount would be waived off.
Q. I have to renew my vehicle registration soon. Shouldn't I first clear my fines in order to do this?
A. If you have already got the discount, you don't need to pay off the fines to renew your vehicle registration. The fine amount will remain on your traffic file till the initiative ends (February 6, 2020). If you commit to safe driving till then, the entire amount will be cleared. If not, you will need to clear the fines then.
Q. I am among the motorists who have got the 50 per cent discount. If I commit a traffic offence in the next six months, do I lose the discount?

A. No, the 50 per cent discount remains. You just won't get the additional discounts for driving traffic violations-free in the next six months.
Q. I have been driving very carefully since the scheme was announced, but have been booked for some very minor traffic offences. Will I not get the discount?

Drivers who have been driving carefully will be let off in case of minor offences.

Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, the Commander in Chief of Dubai Police, said that the efforts drivers have put in to follow the rules and regulations for several months will not go in vain in case of minor offences that do not harm other drivers or road users.

Q. I had a Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) fine issued before February this year. Why am I not getting a 50 per cent off on that despite not committing any violations since then?

A. The discounts are not applicable on Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Municipality fines.
