All seven stations of the soon-to-open Dubai Metro route 2020 will have smart fare gates that will sport 3D cameras as an added safety feature, a top official from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said.

Speaking to Khaleej Times on the sidelines of Gitex Technology Week on Monday, Mohammed Yousuf Al Mudharreb, RTA director of rail operations, noted that the 3D camera will be able to scan objects more accurately.

"For example, if someone is carrying a stroller, the camera will send a signal to the swing gate to keep it open for a longer time to let the person pass safely," Al Mudharreb.

Unlike the current flap barrier gates at Metro's Red and Green lines which only have sensors that open and close the gates at fixed intervals, the smart swing gate, with the 3D camera mounted on top, will scan the passengers from top to bottom and determine if the person would need more time to pass the gate.

Fare evaders, however, are warned that the smart camera has facial recognition and can catch those who will not tap their Nol cards.

Smart fare gates are also fitted with ultra-smart features with high accuracy in scanning Nol cards, including the virtual Nol card saved im the passenger's mobile phone.

Compared with the barrier gates, the smart fare gates also require little space, and that's why the RTA can put more gates at the counter, Al Mudharreb added.

The smart fare gates will also have LED lights and are more energy efficient than the barrier gates.

Route 2020 is set to begin commercial operations on May 20, 2020, five months before the inauguration of the highly anticipated Dubai Expo 2020. The Dubai Metro Route 2020 will take passengers from Dubai Marina to the Expo site in under 16 minutes.

When completed, the 15km Metro extension will link the Nakheel Harbour and Tower station on the Metro's Red Line to the Expo 2020 site, passing through Dubai Investments Park, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan and Jumeirah Golf Estates. Route 2020 will not only facilitate the transport of millions of riders to the Expo site, but will also serve around 270,000 residents living in those fast-growing communities, according to the RTA.

Route 2020's total cost is Dh10.6 billion, including the construction of the railway extension and seven stations, as well as an upgrade to the existing Metro network.
