Over 100 accidents were reported due to the traffic violation of jumping red signal in Dubai. One death and 127 injured were reported in these accidents in 2017, according to Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director-general of General Department of Traffic at the Dubai Police.
"Jumping the red signal is considered one of the most serious violations as accidents resulting from this violation often cause death or serious injuries. While 100 road accidents were reported last year, this January saw six road accidents resulting in the injury of four people."
Brig Mazrouei pointed out that jumping the red signal always lead to collisions with vehicles coming from other directions, often opposite or perpendicular.
"Drivers usually increase speed while approaching the traffic lights so they can cross before it turns red. They overlook moving cars on other sides."
Brig Mazrouei said the fine for jumping red signal is Dh1,000 and 12 black points will be added to the driver's licence, and the car will be confiscated for 30 days. The fine for heavy vehicles for the same violation is Dh3,000 with their license suspended for one year.
