14 new UAE road radars installed; maximum speed limits announced
Ras Al Khaimah - Solar-powered radars in Ras Al Khaimah to reduce emirate's carbon footprint
New solar-powered speed radars have been installed on key UAE roads, according to a statement released by Ras Al Khaimah Police on Saturday.
Effective from January 10, 2021, traffic speed on select roads in Ras Al Khaimah will be monitored by 14 more radars.
Major General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan, Commander-in-Chief of Ras Al Khaimah Police, said the new radars are operating on solar power to reduce power consumption - go greener by reducing the emirate's carbon footprint.
“The new sustainable and environment friendly radars will help boost traffic safety by controlling and monitoring speed limits, and curbing road accidents and casualties, accordingly.”
“Five of these new radars have been installed on the road extending from Kadra Bridge - to the south of RAK city, to the Dafta area.”
The speed limit on this road has been set at 100kmph, with a buffer speed of 20kmph, he explained. “The radar will catch any driver speeding at 121kmph on this road.”
Three other radars, with the same speed limit, have been fixed on the Manie road that connects the distant southern areas of the emirate with Kalba city in the emirate of Sharjah, Maj-Gen Alwan added.
“Two more radars, with the same speed limits, have been installed on the Shuhada (Martyrs) Road.”
The latter four radars, with different speed limits, have been fitted on the final extension of the new Emirates Bypass road, recently opened for traffic, he underlined.
“The speed limit on this road is set at 120kmph, with a buffer speed of 20kmph, and hence, the radar will nab any driver speeding at 141kmph on the road.”
Speeding major cause of accidents
Speeding, as per latest studies and statistics, is one of the main reasons behind traffic accidents nationwide, Maj-Gen Alwan revealed.
“Such mishaps have killed and seriously injured many people, causing distress to parents, families, and friends.”
Maj-Gen. Alwan said the new speed radars are among the most sophisticated in the world.
“They have been installed in light of accidents reports received from hot spots across Ras Al Khaimah.”
"The new radars can detect and photograph speeding vehicles in both directions."
