Cabs in Sharjah will soon be fitted with surveillance cameras in a project that is being rolled out this year, it was announced on Tuesday.
Sharjah Taxi said the cameras would first be installed in a number of its cabs in the experimental phase, before being applied to its entire fleet of 1,300 vehicles around the emirate.
This makes Sharjah the fourth emirate to equip its cabs with security cameras, following Abu Dhabi, Dubai and, recently, Ras Al Khaimah.

Mohammed Abdullah Al Buraimi, executive director of Sharjah Taxi, said the new cameras would provide high-resolution footage that would contribute to the evaluation of transport services.
“Sharjah Taxi is constantly striving to improve and develop services provided in the taxi sector, while adhering to the highest driving standards and professional and ethical behaviour. The comfort and safety of both our customers and drivers is always our highest priority. The new cameras...(are also aimed at) motivating our drivers to provide unsurpassed service to customers,” Al Buraimi said.
Besides the installation of new cameras, Sharjah Taxi also continues with stringent precautionary measures, he added. Taxis are sterilised daily and after every use. Drivers are required to wear face masks and gloves. Every car is also equipped with hand sanitisers.
Sharjah Taxi has a fleet of 1,300 vehicles that serve the emirate’s roads 24/7 — including 100 vehicles for the central and eastern regions, 200 vehicles for Sharjah International Airport, 20 women-only taxis, 130 family-friendly taxis, and limousines. Vehicles for people of determination are also available.
