About 60 per cent of minor accidents reported in Sharjah were caused by failure to leave space between vehicles — a practice known as tailgating. The emirate reported 24,400 minor traffic accidents in the last four months of 2020, Rafid Automotive Solutions said on Monday.

Abdelrahman Alshamsi, Accident & RSA Department Manager at Rafid, gave a break-up of the causes of the crashes reported from September to December:

>> 60%: Failure to maintain a safe distance.

>> 10%: Lack of lane discipline.

>> 10%: Reversing the vehicle without paying due attention.

>> 10%: Negligence and inattentive driving.

>> 10%: Other reasons.

Alshamsi advised motorists to adhere to traffic safety rules. “It is imperative that every driver contributes to reducing traffic accidents through his own personal awareness, commitment and focus.”

In the event of a minor traffic accident, motorists must take the vehicles off the road and use the Rafid app to report it.
