Abu Dhabi - Annan died in Geneva at the age of 80, prompting a barrage of tributes from around the world for the "diplomatic rock star".

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, said former UN secretary-general and Nobel peace laureate Kofi Annan, who passed away on Saturday, was a man who had dedicated himself to bringing about peace.
Annan died in Geneva at the age of 80, prompting a barrage of tributes from around the world for the "diplomatic rock star".
"We have lost a statesman who was dedicated to the service of humanity and we extend our sincere condolences to his family," Sheikh Mohamed said.
The Ghanaian national, who lived in Switzerland, was a career diplomat who projected quiet charisma and was widely credited for raising the world body's profile in global politics during his two terms as UN chief from 1997 to 2006. Annan died in hospital after a short illness.
