Fruits, vegetables stalls in Ajman neighbourhoods soon

Ajman - The decision aims to aid with the emirate's rapid and urban expansion

Soon, residential areas in Ajman will have vegetables and fruits stalls to cater to the daily needs of the people. The Ajman Municipality will issue licences for these outlets, which will be obliged to sell produce to consumers at reasonable prices.
The move comes following instructions by Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Naimi, chairman of Ajman Municipality and Planning departments. It is also aimed at opening new opportunities for small and medium business projects.
The decision also aims to cope with the emirate's rapid and urban expansion, said Khalid Al Hosani, executive director of the municipality's Health and Environment department.
The population growth and residential areas' expansion needs the provision of markets in proximity to these neighbourhoods. The central fruits and vegetables market is located far from these areas.
Al Hosani said the residents' happiness would be increased by closer grocery shopping areas. "The municipality has received a number of suggestions on the issue of their daily fruits and vegetables purchases. It's difficult to travel all the way to the market to buy a small amount of food items. Residents cannot purchase large quantities either, as fruits and vegetables rotten and spoil quickly," he said.
The new stores will also contribute to the integration of services and other commercial establishments that cater to residents. The outlets will be required to apply all health regulations and ensure the safety and hygiene of its supplies. They will also be subject to regular food inspections.
The licensing will also open up investment for small and important projects, Al Hosani said.
