A 34-year-old Syrian father and his five-year-old son received 60 per cent burn injuries when a bottle of perfume caught fire and exploded in their apartment in Al Majaz area.
The incident happened when the father - identified as HBZ - was trying to open the bottle, which he had received as a gift from his relative in Syria.
His son - identified as AHBZ, who was playing with a cigarette lighter, accidentally lit it up causing the fire to break out and the subsequent blast. Both were left with burns in the face and abdomen.
A member of the family called the national ambulance which immediately arrived at the house and rushed them to Al Kuwaiti Hospital, where they were admitted in its ICU.
Police said that due to huge alcohol content in the bottle - which was locked up for a long time and exposed to heat - it caught fire when the lighter was lit by the little boy and the explosion triggered. The flames badly burnt the face of the father - who was holding the bottle in the hand - and caused burns to the son as well.
The victims have hospitalised and put on artificial respiratory system. Later, they were shifted to Al Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi, following request of their families.
