Flag hoisting ceremony at the Consulate-General of India in Dubai was live-streamed for three million Indian expats living and working in the UAE, who couldn't attend the event due to social distancing norms.
The flag was hoisted at 7.30am by Dr Aman Puri, Indian Consul-General of India in Dubai, followed by the singing of the Indian National Anthem. Only members of the consulate gathered at the venue to mark this occasion physically, which also saw a few traditional music and dance performances.
Focusing on the strong India-UAE bilateral ties, Dr Puri said: "India and the UAE have been strong partners, especially during these times of unprecedented crisis. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to the UAE leadership for their support of India's efforts in the repatriation of stranded nationals.
"Going forward we hope and wish that the Indian community continues to play a significant and strong role in improving the relationship," he added.
Excerpts of Indian President Ram Nath Kovind's message, read out by Dr Puri, hailed the relentless efforts of coronavirus frontliners.
Low-key celebrations
Indian organisations in the UAE also witnessed muted celebrations limiting attendees to mark the occasion.
EP Johnson, president of Indian Association Sharjah, said: "Celebrations had to be scaled down due to coronavirus. There were around 100 people who gathered with all social distancing measures in place. The event was followed by breakfast for the attendees."
SV Kutty, media coordinator of Indian Association Ajman, added: "Our celebration this year was low key, like most places. It was restricted to flag hoisting ceremony in the presence of managing committee members."
