Dubai - The UAE observed 2018 as the Year of Zayed to mark the 100 years since the birth of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The Central Bank of the UAE will reissue commemorative silver coins with the 'Year of Zayed' logo to meet the "increasing demand". The apex bank will issue 5,000 silver commemorative coins weighing 60 grammes. The silver commemorative coin will be available for sale at the Central Bank's main office and branches from April 22.
The UAE observed 2018 as the Year of Zayed to mark the 100 years since the birth of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father.
The bank is issuing the commemorative currency to pay tribute to Sheikh Zayed and the pivotal role he played in establishing the UAE, its subsequent historical achievements and its recognition on the global stage.
The initiative aims to pay tribute to the visionary leadership of the UAE and "reinforce the history from which the people of the UAE derive their unique identity". "It is very important to commemorate the Zayed Centenary and recognise his essential contribution to the rise and progress of the UAE," said Mubarak Rashid Al Mansouri, governor of the Central Bank of the UAE.
