Bangladeshi community mark Mourning Day in UAE

Abu Dhabi - It was on August 15, 1975, that Bangladesh's founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were assassinated.

Bangladesh Embassy in Abu Dhabi held a community event to remember the country's greatest visionary leader. Floral tributes were paid to the portrait of the leader, special prayers said and a discussion on the life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman followed.
The embassy officials and community leaders distributed food packets at workers' accommodation in the Mussafah industrial area.
Mohammed Abu Zafar, Bangladesh Ambassador to the UAE, urged expats to redouble efforts to build a prosperous Bangladesh. "This is National Mourning Day, I ask Bangladeshi expatriates to follow the ideals of our Father of the Nation and realise his dreams of making Bangladesh a prosperous country for all. We must redouble our efforts towards realising that aim. We need to support the vision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina - the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She is striving hard to realise the dream of her father," he told Khaleej Times.
This year also marks the 100th birth anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. "A few events have been held as part of the 'Mujib Varsha'. Many more events will continue in this birth centennial," Zafar added.
