Although most motorists take proper precautions while refuelling their car tanks, a vehicle recently burst into flames at a petrol pump in UAE.
The Emirati man and woman barely escaped with their lives after fuel attendants noticed a fire had flared in the fuel tank of their car.
Make sure you follow these safety tips while refuelling your car at any petrol station in the UAE:
1- Don't smoke, use a lighter, strike a match:
Using anything near a petrol pump which can cause a spark is extremely hazardous. Make sure not to ignite open flame even inside your vehicle while refuelling your tank.
2- Switch off your engine:
Although common knowledge, make sure to practice this essential safety habit. Also pull the key out of the ignition entirely to prevent the engine from accidentally switching on.
3- Don't use your mobile phone:
Now with self-service stations, motorists are personally dealing with refuelling equipment. Anything that can cause a distraction is a potential fire and safety hazard.
4- Discharge static electricity:
A buildup of charge can take place while you are outside the vehicle while refuelling. Make sure to touch a metal part of the car away from the nozzle to release any static charge that could cause a spark. Do not re-enter the car while refuelling.
5- Correct handling of the nozzle:
Make sure you carefully unscrew the fuel tank cap before taking the nozzle out of its dispenser unit. Park your vehicle on the right or left side of the refuelling station to avoid overextending the fuel hose.
Do not open the hose before properly inserting the nozzle into the fuel tank and securing the handle. While removing the nozzle, be careful not to drip fuel on the pavement. Do not drive away until you double check the hose has been fully restored to its dispenser unit.
6- Drive slowly and ventilate:
After filling your car's fuel tank, make sure to air out the vehicle and drive slowly. Do not turn on electrical appliances or use open flame until the vapours have completely dissipated.
For motorists unfamiliar with self-service stations, ask for help when in doubt from local gas attendants.
