The Sharjah Police have confiscated 423 vehicles, including abandoned vehicles and four cars wanted by security authorities.
Lt-Col Hamad Abdullah bin Qasmul, deputy director of the Community Police Department in Sharjah, said the police launched an inspection campaign in cooperation with the Sharjah Municipality, targeting abandoned and neglected vehicles and other vehicles required by the security authorities.
Police patrols and municipality inspectors detected a number of vehicles left for long periods by their owners in public places. As such vehicles could be used as shelter for illegal activities and committing crimes they have to be removed to ensure security in residential and commercial areas.
He added that the campaign aims to strengthen preventive measures to reduce these negative phenomena by removing these vehicles, and taking the necessary measures against irregularities and illegal behaviours.
Lt-Col Bin Qasamoul explained that leaving the vehicles for long periods may expose them to theft or their exploitation in unlawful acts, in addition to distorting the appearance of the city. The campaign continues for a whole month in all parts of the emirate.
The owners are notified by the Sharjah Municipality through a warning poster stuck on the vehicle for 48 hours, and after the prescribed period, the vehicles will be shifted to the municipality's confiscation area. In the event that the car is required for security authorities, they will be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department.
He urged motorists not to leave their vehicles dirty and abandoned for long time.
